The collaboration with FirstLight Power focuses on the development of new DG solar, DG storage and utility-scale self-contained storage at hydropower facilities in Massachusetts and Connecticut.
Borrego Solar has been selected by FirstLight Power, a clean energy company with nearly 1,400 MW of pumped hydro, battery, hydro, and solar, to build new ground-mounted and floating distributed generation (DG) Solar, DG storage and utility-scale self-contained storage at FirstLight’s hydroelectric facilities in Massachusetts and Connecticut.
The Borrego FirstLight relationship takes into account multiple storage item types and configurations in the FirstLight real estate portfolio.Project types include, but are not limited to, utility-scale self-contained storage, DG self-contained storage, and PV+ESS.
“I am excited to partner with Borrego to accelerate New England’s path to a fully decarbonized grid by introducing innovative solar and energy storage products to customers in Massachusetts and Connecticut,” said Alicia Barton, President and CEO of FirstLight.
The installation will be similar to FirstLight’s first solar facility, Northfield Hills, Massachusetts. The 2MW installation, one of the largest in New England when it was built in 2011, consists of more than 18,000 solar panels and covers approximately 11 acres. The solar facility is adjacent to FirstLight’s pumped-storage hydroelectric operations on the Connecticut River.
The partnership advances FirstLight’s mission to create a clean, affordable, reliable and equitable electrical grid. The new development will provide local employment opportunities and increase FirstLight’s economic development impact in the local community.
“Borrego’s partnership with FirstLight will help create innovative hybrid renewable energy solutions in New England — combining solar and energy storage resources with existing generation,” said Jared Connell, Borrego’s vice president of project development for New England.
This announcement with Borrego follows FirstLight’s recent announcement of a partnership in Connecticut to advance new hybrid renewable energy projects across the state, the company’s participation in a successful investment consortium that saw the company participate in a recent NY Bight offshore wind project. The lease was acquired at auction.
